Theme Baskets

The PTA is starting to organize the annual Theme Basket Fundraiser and we could use your help in two areas:
1. BASKETS: If you have any medium to large sized baskets in good condition that are just taking up space in your storage, we would love to accept them as donations to this cause. If you would like to donate a basket, simply drop it off in the front office of the school anytime between now and February 26th.
2. BUSINESSES: If you own or work for a company that could donate a product, service or gift certificate for one or more of the baskets, it would be greatly appreciated. Some of the basket donations come from the kids and their families, but we also rely on business contributions to supplement the baskets. Each business who donates will be recognized in the Springville Herald, on posters throughout the community, in the school newsletter and blog, and there will be a table set up during the fundraiser auction for businesses who have contributed to display business cards, flyers, etc. A good advertising and PR opportunity in exchange for helping the school.
If you would like to donate, please contact Amber Park 801-489-4926 by May 5th. Thank you for helping make Art City Elementary better each year!

Recess Procedures
We want to inform you of the current policies that are in place for our recess schedule. If the outside temperature is under 20 degrees, all students are required to stay inside. We provide appropriate activities on these days. If the outside temperature is above 20 degrees and all other conditions are normal (wind, rain, snow), students are sent outside for activities. Students must be prepared with coats, gloves, hats, etc. Please make sure names are labeled on these items. Students with notes from home indicating the need to stay inside will be provided a place to do so. Air quality is also a concern, so the office does monitor the air quality on a daily basis. We follow the guidelines provided to us by the Utah Department of Health.

2009-2010 Student Wellness Program
The challenge for February is to eat at least a total of 5 fruits or vegetables for most days of the week for 18 days total.

PTA Meeting
Our next PTA meeting will be Tuesday, February 2 at 10 a.m. in the Teacher's Lounge. We love to hear new ideas or to get your input on PTA activities. Please feel free to come to the meetings
even if you just want to listen in on what is going on.

Yearbook Presale
Be on the look out for a flyer about yearbooks coming this month. The flyer will consist of an order form that you can turn in with your payment to reserve your copy of the yearbook that will be passed out the last week of school. The cost of yearbooks this year is going to be $9.00. In case you were wondering, the $9.00 charge is what the company who produces the yearbooks charges us to make them. The PTA doesn't make any kind of a profit on the books. So, all of your money goes into making the book the great product that it is!

Class Pictures
Speaking of the yearbook - we just want to make you aware that on February 10th, the day of Spring Pictures, our yearbook committee also takes class pictures that we then put in the yearbook. We all agreed that we missed the "old fashioned" class pictures that we used to take with the whole class standing together. The photography company that we use for school pictures doesn't do that kind of picture any more so that's why we decided to start taking one of our own that we could use in the yearbook. So, even if your not planning having Spring Pictures taken, your child might still want to comb their hair and brush their teeth that day for class pictures!

A Big Thank You
Thanks you to Jamey Smith and her committee for the great dinner they provided to the teachers during SEP's in January.

It seems like every school year goes by faster and faster! I can't believe the Christmas Season is already here. We hope you and your children are enjoying the year so far and continue to have a great year. I wanted to share a quote by Lillian Katz I read recently that I think sums up why it's so important for us to be involved in our community, "The good life for our children can be secured only if the good life is also secured for all other people's children." Have a great Holiday!

CHANGE IN PICTURE MAKE-UP DAY
Picture make-up day is now scheduled for November 5th. Please remember to send your child’s picture packet with them that day.

Help Keep Art City Students Healthy
Please help us to minimize the spread of germs at our school!
· DO NOT send students to school unless they have been fever free for 24 hours.
· DO NOT send students to school if they have an appointment the same day to be diagnosed for an illness.

Fitness Challenge
The fitness challenge for November is to be active for at least 30 minutes for most days of the week (4 days a week-18 days total). Two things to think about before this challenge:
· What is an activity or activities you can do most days of the week?
· What time can you do this activity most days of the week?
Some examples of activity may include brisk walking, swimming, riding a bike, jogging, hiking, playing basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, jump rope, or working in your yard. Get out and have some fun!

Excuse Your Children
Please remember to call the office in the morning if your child will be absent. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Cookie Dough Fundraiser
On November 5th we will begin our school fundraiser. Some items offered for sale are cookie dough, cheesecakes, pies and soft pretzels. The money earned through this fundraiser will be used for technology and books. The fundraiser will run through November 13th and the items purchased will be back on November 19th.

Pick-up and Drop-off
Please remember that the church parking lot adjacent to the school is available for the use of parents for picking up and dropping off. For the safety and ease of students and parents we strongly urge you to make use of this parking lot when you pick-up or drop-off your children. You can park in the parking lot and wait for your child or walk the short distance to the school. Thank you for helping us to keep all of our students safe.

Fridays
Fridays are the day to show your school spirit by wearing your school T-shirt or sweatshirt or wearing the school colors (blue and yellow).

PTA NEWS

Healthy Lifestyle Month
November is PTA Healthy Lifestyles Month. There are some great resources at PTA.org/goodchoices that give you simple ways to be healthier everyday. Remember when sending treats to school, the school district and PTA are really encouraging us to make sure they are healthy or non-food items. Also, when helping with holiday parties there are great ideas on familyfun.com for healthy and fun snacks and /or extra craft ideas if you want to do away with the party treat altogether. Have a great month!

PTA Meeting
The PTA meeting for this month is November 3 at 10:00 in the teachers lounge. Everyone is invited! Please note that we will not be having a PTA meeting in December.

Volunteer of the Month
Our volunteer of the month is Kiz Lister. She has spent many hours helping at Art City. Thank you for all your help!

Thank You!
We have a lot of people to thank for all the great activities we had last month. As we have said before, we could not do anything without our great volunteers!
Thank you to Mrs. Hadlock for organizing the Red Ribbon Week activities and also the members of our Health and Safety committee that helped her out. Custom Events, the company that provides us with our carnival each May, gave us a free day with 3 of their rides that we used in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, so thank you to them as well.
Thanks to Sarah Sumsion and her committee for their help on picture day. All of the school t-shirts should be handed out (unless you have been informed otherwise) and we love them! We want to thank Christi Brenchley for all her work with that.
Thank you to Stacy Hatch and her committee for all of their work on the Reflections program. We had a great turn out, so they had their work cut out for them!
Thank you to Mrs. Lindsey, Jennifer Follette and their committee for a WONDERFUL Book Fair!

Christmas Tree Wish List
Believe it or not, next month is Christmas! If you are thinking of buying your child’s teacher a gift for Christmas, we wanted to remind you that in December we will be posting our Christmas trees by each teacher’s door. Each tree has ornaments on it that list some of the things teachers might need in their classroom. This is a great resource for teacher gift giving ideas. Please remember that giving a gift to a teacher is optional.

Reflections
We saw some great participation in Reflections this year! We had over 100 entries! We have some great talent in our school. To us on the Reflections Committee, beauty is seeing all your children who participated. Thank you to all the parents who supported your children by encouraging them and helping them to fill out entry forms and follow the rules for their category. And to the children who entered: We admire your hard work and your enthusiasm to participate. Great job!

Please know that a reservation is required a day or two prior to the day you wish to attend. The price for adults is $2.75 and the price for children is $1.75. Please be aware that this is a CASH ONLY event.

Healthy Classroom Rewards for Students
This generation of students faces extraordinary health issues related to diet and exercise. Healthy students are better learners. As a result, the Nebo School District Student Wellness Policy, passed in 2008, created some guidelines for when foods and beverages are made available to students. The policy asks that the food and beverages be more nutritious and feature healthy choices. See http://www.nebo.edu/pubpolicy/E/EFA.pdf. Together, parents and teachers of Nebo School District can help students to achieve and maintain good physical health as part of the child’s growth and education.

Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness Challenges
Watch for information in the coming months for Healthy Lifestyle Challenges!

Please do not pull your vehicle through the bus lane. Please know that this poses a hazard to our students. We have had a few close calls.

Recycling
We would like to remind you that we have a recycling receptacle for newspapers and magazines located in the parking lot. Your recycling efforts at this location really help our school.

PTA NEWS

Green Ribbon Week Recap
Green Ribbon Week was a great success! A big thank you goes out to our Health & Safety commissioner, Amy Peterson and her committee for a great Green Ribbon Week. We had a lot of kids participate this year. Thank you to Officer Mitchell and Officer Drumm, who presented our bike safety assembly. We would like to thank the following for their generous donations: Springville Pool, Utah County Health Department, Art City PTA and Dr.’s Richard Francis, Dale Hadley, Brian Tuft, Mark Fullmer, Dennis Blume and Robert Perkins. Just for your information, you can purchase helmets from the Health Department for $10.00.

PTA Meeting
On Tuesday, October 6th we will be having our PTA meeting at 10:00 a.m. in the teacher’s lounge. All members are invited to attend. Please come, we would love to hear your input!
Red Ribbon Week
October is Red Ribbon Month, which focuses on being Drug Free. The dates for Red Ribbon Week are October 12-14. Watch for a flyer to come home with information on the weeks activities.

Theme Baskets
Do you have baskets stacked up in your garage or basement from past Theme Basket auctions that are driving you crazy? If you do, we would love to have them donated back to us. Then we could use them again in future auctions. So, if you aren’t using your baskets and they are in fairly good condition, please feel free to bring them into the office and get them out of your way!

Reflections
Reflections entries are due soon! We hope that your children have been enjoying creating their entries reflecting this year’s theme “Beauty Is…” The entries are due to the front office by 3:00 p.m. on October 9. Copies of the entry forms, media releases (on the back of the entry forms), category rules and general rules are all available in the front office; you can also find them on-line at www.artcitynews.blogspot.com or www.utahpta.org/individual.htm. Please be sure that your child’s entries follow all the rules and that the entry forms and media releases are filled out completely, including student and parent signatures. Of course, entering Reflections is completely optional, but it provides a great opportunity for the children to explore different art forms. We look forward to seeing the fun things your children will do with this year’s theme! If you have any questions, please call Stacey Hatch at 801-489-8474.

Volunteers
Please make sure to record all of your volunteer hours. This is important information that the PTA reports to the State. This includes time spent in classrooms, helping outside the classroom (even babysitting for someone who volunteers in the classroom) and work spent as part of a PTA committee. The volunteer sheet is located in the office for you to report all of your volunteer time. We highly value volunteers and the time that they spend. Our programs wouldn’t be successful without our great volunteers!
