Halloween Parade Update

Halloween Parade Reminder

Parents—Get ready to be totally spooked! It’s time to break out the costume and prepare for Art City’s Halloween Parade!

There has been a small shift in time. The parade will be the last event of the day on Friday, October 31st, following the individual class parties as planned by room parents/volunteers. The parade will begin at 1:45 PM. As before, parents that want to attend should assemble in the gym to watch.

This change in time is to accommodate parents who attend. With the parade at the end of school, parents can leave directly with their student (s) instead of making another trip.

*Please note that school policy does not allow students to wear masks, gory makeup or bring any type of weapon to school. Thanks for your cooperation.

October Newsletter

School News
New District-Wide Attendance Policy
Nebo School District is urging all parents and students to carefully review the new district-wide attendance policy that will be in effect for the 2008-09 school year. New Utah laws have resulted in many changes to the Elementary and Secondary Attendance policies. Nebo
School District wants to work closely with students who struggle with attendance and with their parents to avoid court referrals and keep students in classes. Attendance is vital for success. The following information provides highlights of both policies found in the “Parent Information Guide” mailed to each family. The attendance policies are available, in their entirety,
on Nebo’s web site at www.nebo.edu. Choose the “student services” link and then click on the policy youwould like to review.
Elementary Policy
• Parents must call their student’s school within
two days of an absence to excuse the absence
stating the reason for their student missing
school. Parents should contact teachers to
arrange for missing work.
• A student who is more than 60 minutes late to
school may be considered absent.
• Parents will receive a concern letter if their
student missed five days as unexcused.
• Parents will receive a Notice of Compulsory
Education Violation letter, and are required to
meet with school administration if their students
miss ten days as unexcused.
• If a student missed five more days as
unexcused after that meeting, a Compulsory
Education Violation is issued and the parents
will be referred to the Utah County Attorney’s
office.
Nebo School District looks forward to working with students and parents in the coming school year. The success of each student is important to us. If you have any questions regarding the new laws or policies, please contact your school’s administration.
National School Lunch Week
The theme for this year’s National School Lunch Week is, “Vote for School Lunch.” On October 13th through 15th, parents are encouraged to eat lunch with their kids. Please know that a reservation is required a day or two prior to the day you wish to attend. The price for
adults is $2.75 and the price for children is $1.75. Please be aware that this is a CASH ONLY event. Watch the menu for the three most favorite lunch items being served.
Early Out Day
Art City faculty and administration thank you for your support of early out Wednesdays. During that time the faculty meets in grade level teams to collaborate on student, class, grade level and school needs.
Recycling
We would like to remind you that we have a recycling receptacle for newspapers and magazines located in the parking lot. Your recycling efforts at this location really help our school.
Safety
Please do not pull your vehicle through the bus lane. Please know that this poses a hazard to our students. We have had a few close calls.
Halloween Parade
Are your costumes ready for the Art City Elementary Halloween Parade? The parade will be held on October 31st from 12:45 to 1:45 pm. Watch for more information to come.

Art City Elementary PTA
Goals for 2008-2009
Based upon the response of the Needs Assessment Survey, we have determined the following 3 areas as our focus for the 2008-2009 school year:
• Promote Respect for Authority and Good
Behavior Towards Others
• Strengthen Parent/Family Involvement in
School
• Encourage and Promote Healthy Nutrition in
the Lives of our Students
The PTA has a blog at www.artcitynews.blogspot.com. Here you will be able to find more information about our goals and what is happening in the PTA. There will also be invitations to join our board meetings and see the minutes from the meetings.
Green Ribbon Week
We would like to thank everyone who participated in Green Ribbon Week and helped to make it such a big success. We would like to give a special thanks to all of the Health and Safety committee and our local sponsors. Thank you to Wendy’s, Allen’s, Ream’s Quiznos, Dairy Queen and the Springville Pool for their donations and support of our community.
Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week is October 20th-23rd. Red Ribbon Week is a national program designated to prevent substance abuse and violence throughout the US. We will have fun activities to support this week and remember to have your kids wear red colors this week. This year’s Red Ribbon Week Theme is “Step it Up: A Call to Action.” Art City students are invited to live a drug free life by participating in a poster contest. All posters are due Tuesday, October 21st and must follow
the theme, “I will stomp out drugs by…” Winning posters will be announced Thursday,
October 23rd
• Oct. 20: Wear Purple and Red
• Oct. 21: “Don’t Let Drugs Turn You Inside Out”
Wear inside out clothes
• Oct. 22: “Sock it to Drugs” Wear crazy socks
• Oct. 23: “Boot Out Drugs” Wear boots
Drug Awareness Night for Red Ribbon Week will be held October 29th at 7:00 pm at Springville High School. All parents and students are invited to attend this event.
PTA Meeting
Our PTA meeting will be held October 7th at 10:00. The meeting will be held in the teachers lounge. All PTA members are invited to attend.
Reflections
If you haven’t already, it’s time to START THE ART! Get your pieces ready for entry in the Reflections contest. Prizes will be awarded to all who participate. You won’t want to miss out.
• Theme: WOW!
• Due Date: October 15th (No entries accepted
before or after this date)
• Entry forms/rules: Available in the office or at
utahpta.org>individual development>reflections
• Categories: Writing, Film/Video, Music
Composition, Visual Art, 3-D Art, Dance,
Photography and Theater
Students can enter several times, but can submit only one entry per category, and they must submit all signed paperwork with EVERY entry. The paperwork will only take a few minutes to complete, and it’s such a worthy project. Your children will always remember their entries and the time spent preparing them! Did you know that is perfectly legal to enter a school assignment into the contest? So be looking at your children’s art and writing projects. Students can earn a
prize for something they’ve already completed! Entries must have been completed this year. With such a great theme, this year should be our best EVER. We can’t wait to see the entries. For questions or further information, contact Kim Jepperson 491-9208.
Fridays
Fridays are the day to show your school spirit by wearing your school T-Shirt or sweatshirt or wearing the school colors (blue and yellow).

A Big Thank You

Wow! What a great couple of weeks we’ve had. There are so many of you we’d like to thank for giving of your time and talents to help us have a successful September.

First of all thank you to Kristi Ohman for organizing our room parents. We love our Room Parents! Kristi will have reminders for all who volunteered at Back to School Night. Thank you parents for signing up to help your student’s teachers.

Thanks to Cory Fisher for leading our Health and Safety committee in celebrating Green Ribbon Month. The students of Art City were recognized in the local paper and a crew from a TV station joined us as well. There were over 500 students that participated in our “Walk to School” day. Thanks parents for encouraging and donning your sneakers too.

Thanks to Jennifer Follette, Deanna Lindsey and of course our own beloved librarian Angel Pearce for a spectacular book fair. The Book Fair committee put in some long hours and we greatly appreciate them. A few highlights of our Safari week included visits from the in-house gorilla, the reading mouse, a BIG boa constrictor (wrapped around Mr. Rowe!) and lots and lots of great books.

We hope the SEP night was successful for our teachers and we thank Kelli Cutler and the SEP Dinner Committee for feeding our teachers and staff so well. Yum!

When you visit Art City on Fridays you’ll notice lots and lots of pink and grey t-shirts and sweatshirts. WOW do they look great. Jami Welch has put in a considerable amount of hours in making sure our Elementary Students are the best looking kids around. A big thanks to Jami for all her work and perseverance. There will be one more t-shirt order placed so if you are interested get your money to the school as soon as possible.

As you can tell we could not function as a PTA board without ALL your help. We appreciate our teachers for participating and supporting our activities, Mark Warner for setting up and taking down many, many tables, Mr. Rowe for making it fun, and for our parents who LOVE to be involved.
Now…on to October!
