October Newsletter

National School Lunch Week
The theme for this year’s National School Lunch Week is “School Lunch – What’s On Your Tray?” On October 11th -13th, parents are encouraged to eat lunch with their kids. Please know that a reservation is required a day or two prior to the day you wish to attend. The price for adults is $2.75 and the price for children is $1.75. Please be aware that this is a CASH ONLY event.

Book Fair
Calling heroes everywhere! Art City is celebrating the heroes in our lives at the Scholastic Book Fair October 25-28. We can find heroes in our community, school and our favorite books. Help us give a shout out to super heroes and super books during our week long celebration!
The book fair will be open during school hours with a bonus late night on Thursday, October 28th.

October 2010 Fitness Challenge
Art City Elementary is having a fitness challenge for all of our students for the month of October.
The Challenge is to be active for at least 30 minutes for most days of the week for a total of 20 days for the month of October. Each student will receive an October calendar to record the 30
minutes of activity each day he or she participates. Parents, please encourage this at home.
Examples for the physical activity can be: brisk walking, swimming, riding a bike, jogging,
mowing your lawn, hiking, yoga, weight lifting, basketball, soccer, tennis, gardening, vacuuming the house, working in the yard or softball.
Each student will receive something when they turn in their completed calendars. We will also have a drawing from each grade level participants for a boy and a girl to win some sports equipment.
Thanks so much for your help and support! We want Art City students to be active and healthy!

Healthy Lifestyles
The Nebo School District Student Wellness Policy has created guidelines for when foods and beverages are made available to students.
The policy asks that parents consider non-food choices for classroom parties, presentations,
and celebrations. Non-food celebrations can include playing games, making crafts, or purchasing class books, hand sanitizer or sporting equipment. You can contact your child’s teacher for ideas.
When food is to be served, the policy asks that healthier snacks be used.
To read the entire policy, go to http://www.nebo.edu/pubpolicy/E/EFA.pdf

Fridays
Fridays are the day to show your school spirit by wearing your school t-shirt or sweatshirt or
wearing the school colors (blue and yellow).

Local Business gives back

Just a bit of information. The new Mod Bod Factory Outlet store in Springville will donate 5% of your purchase to the PTA of your choice (hopefully Art City PTA!) if you bring in the "back to school" flyer. There is a stamp on the back of the flyer that says "5% of your purchase will go to the PTA of your choice." Thanks Mod Bod!

September Newsletter

Welcome from the New Principal

Welcome back, Eagles! I am excited to be the new principal at Art City this year. I can already tell great things will be happening.

My name is Lori Nielsen. I have been in education for 15 years. Before coming to Art City I taught in Spanish Fork at the Canyon Elementary. I have taught 2nd, 3rd and 5th grades.

I am married to Sterling and have five children; Trevor 20 years old, Robbie 18, Hattie 16, Sadie 14, and Hunter who is 11. We love sports, camping, outdoors and laughing together. I love to read, socialize, exercise and learn new things.

My hopes for the new school year are to get to know the people in my new school family and continue to make Art City the best school ever. My office is always open and I would love to hear your ideas and suggestions. Thanks for your kind words and the wonderful job you do with our children. Let’s make this the best year ever!

Your Friend,

Lori Nielsen

PTA meeting

Our first PTA meeting for the 2010-2011 school year will be Wednesday, September 8th at 10:00 a.m. in the faculty lounge. If you are a commissioner, please attend if you can. Your information packet will be given to you this day. All PTA members are welcome to attend.

Fun Run

Get your running shoes on! The 3rd annual Art City Elementary Fun Run is Wednesday, September 15th. The road race (approximately 2.5 miles) is for 3rd-6th graders and will start at 9:00 a.m. Parents are invited to participate in the road race. A shorter race (Art City’s back field) for 1st and 2nd graders will start at 10:00 a.m. Otter pops will be provided for all participants. An awards assembly will be held that afternoon at 1:15 pm. Be on the lookout for the Fun Run flyer that will be coming home with your child in the coming days. Let’s go and pound some pavement!

SEP Dinners

SEP dinners for upper grades will be on Sept. 23. Someone will be contacting you if you've signed up to help for this event.

Thank You

A big thank you to all of our PTA and parent volunteers. We couldn’t do what we do without you!

Please make sure to record all of your volunteer hours on the sheet in the front office. This is important information that the PTA reports to the State. This includes time spent in classrooms, helping outside the classroom, babysitting for someone else who is volunteering in a classroom, and work spent as part of a PTA committee.

Reflections

It’s time for Reflections! The theme for the 2010-2011 reflections contest is “Together we can . . . .” The general rules are: (1) Each entry must be your child's original creation. (2) Interpretation of the theme is more important than technique! (3) Each entry must follow rules of size & content for its arts area. (4) Each student can submit one entry per category.

Students can pick up entry forms and category rules in the front office, or you can find them online at http://www.utahpta.org/prog/reflections/

Please be sure that all rules are followed and that the forms are filled out completely; failure to do so could result in the student’s entry being disqualified, and we would hate to see anyone’s hard work turned away because of an oversight.

Entries will be due October 1st.
