PTA News
Welcome back to school!
Our PTA is ready for action and hopes all our staff and students had a rejuvenating break and are excited for another great year.
Art City PTA needs you!
Join the largest volunteer organization in the state! We need you! Here are the top 5 reasons why you should join PTA.
1. A good part of your membership fee stays at Art City. The money is used to fund programs and events at our school. For example, last year we matched a grant for Mrs. Luther's music program.
2. Being involved in PTA is a great way to get to know the faculty and staff at our school.
3. Speaking of faculty and staff, being involved in PTA is a great way to support our hardworking teachers.
4. You can choose the level of involvement you want to have. You can sign up to volunteer or you can be satisfied knowing that you have financially supported the great events and programs at Art City.
5. Being involved in PTA is a great way to get to know the members of the community, especially other parents and neighbors.
Memberships are only $5.00 to join.
Thank You!
A big thank you goes out to Jami Welch for all her hard work as the School Shirt Commissioner. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped out on registration day, Open House and Back to School Night.
Volunteers
Please make sure to record all of your volunteer hours. This is important information that the PTA reports to the State. This includes time spent in classrooms, helping outside of the classroom (even babysitting for someone who volunteers in the classroom) and work spent as part of a PTA committee. The volunteer sheet is located in the office for you to report all of your volunteer time. We highly value volunteers and the time that they spend. Our programs wouldn't be successful without our great volunteers!
PTA Meeting
Our next PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 2nd at 10:00 A.M. in the faculty room. This is for all Executive Board Members and Commissioners. It's important for all commissioners to be in attendance because committee information, including volunteer sign up sheets, will be handed out. We will also discuss upcoming events.

Reflections
Every year in Utah nearly 60,000 students enter the Reflections program and students at Art City Elementary always excel. Last year one of our amazing students, Laurine Giraud-Carrier even won at the state level! The original categories of Music, Photography, Visual Arts, and Literature, have been expanded to also include 4 additional categories: Dance, Theater, 3D Film and Video. The Reflections theme this year is an awesome one:
“WOW!"
With such an exciting theme, there couldn't be a better year to enter. There will be prizes for everyone who participates. Entries will be due October 15th so don't wait and start creating your “WOW!" art today! More info to come. Rules and entry forms available in the office.
Green Ribbon Month
September is Green Ribbon Month. The Green Ribbon Month program focuses on the prevention of injuries from pedestrian/motor vehicle crashes. We have chosen the week of September 15th-19th to focus on child pedestrian safety and we will be having several activities this week. Mark your calendars for our bicycle safety activity on Tuesday, September 16th (hosted by the Springville Police Department) and our Walk to School Day on Wednesday, September 17th. Watch for more information.
Hearing Screening
Hearing screening for all K, 1, 3, and 6th grade students will be held at Art City on September 8, 2008. If your child does not pass the first screening (many times due to cold or congestion), or is absent, we will do re-screenings two weeks later. If your child does not pass the second screening, we will contact you. If for any reason you do not want your child's hearing screened, please contact Lorie Reese or Ashley Carr at 489-2820 or lorie.reese@nebo.edu or ashley.carr@nebo.edu.

Book Fair
Soma! Ota! Kua! Is your Swahili a little rusty? Allow us to translate: Read! Dream! Grow! Our fall theme, Book Fair Safari, will encourage everyone to do all three! Our book fair will be held a month earlier this year on September 22nd-25th and will coincide with SEP's. We have planned many things to help your child and families enjoy not only great books, but have a fun time at our Book Fair Safari as well. We hope to see you there!
-Monday: The Book Fair Safari is open to the public from 9am to 4pm. Not only can you shop early for the best selection, but you are welcome to join us at lunch time for our Tarzan Yelling Contest. Each grade will be represented by their best Tarzans and Janes in a contest that is sure to get our week off to a loud and fun beginning as we Sona!
-Tuesday: The Safari continues, and the fair will be open from 8am to 4pm. Students, be sure to join the fun and wear your hair like your favorite bird and you may win a prize. It is sure to be an Ota day when you join us after school from 2:50pm to 4pm on a safari. The watering hole will be free from crocodiles so all are welcome to gather round and have a snack. The animals will be hosting a variety of fun craft activities that you can make together.
-Wednesday: The Safari roads will be a bit bumpy today and rain is in the forecast, but we will be open from 8am to 4pm for all your reading needs. The classes will be showing off their writing talents and doing some Kua as they each write a short story or poem about their favorite jungle animal. You are welcome to join us at 10:15am for a reptile extravaganza hosted by the Bean Museum. This special 40 minute show will introduce you to some of the wildlife seen from our Safari Jeeps. The top readers from September will also be honored as we kick off our Ken Garff “Road to Success" reading adventure for the year. It is an event you won't want to miss. Be sure to fold up your sleeping bag early and join us on the trail.
-Thursday: The Safari will be heading back to Springville, but we will take our dreams and continue to grow. Due to the extended travel time needed to return home, the Book Fair Safari Shop will be open until 8pm. During the day we will listen for the jungle call and gather round to Soma to listen to the winning classes' poem or story. All student safari travelers should be sure to bring a favorite jungle animal to spend their Soma time with.
Fridays
Fridays are the day to show your school spirit by wearing your school T-Shirt or sweatshirt or wearing the school colors (blue and yellow).
