School News

Welcome Back
Welcome back to school! We hope you had an enjoyable holiday break and are ready to get back into the swing of things!

Winter Clothing
Please make sure that your child comes to school with appropriate clothing for winter weather. We are still seeing students arriving at school wearing short sleeves, capri pants, thin sweat shirts or sandals when it is so cold outside. To increase the chances of lost items being returned, you may write your child’s name on the article with a permanent marker.

Attendance
Here are a few reminders about attendance that might be helpful:
School officially begins at 8:30 a.m.
Please call the school first thing in the morning if your child will miss due to illness and arrange with the teacher for someone to pick up any missed work for that day.
Inform teachers well in advance of preplanned absences such as vacations or surgeries and arrange for work to be picked up and made up.

Open Enrollment
The open enrollment window closes on February 20th. Applications are available in the office. If you applied and were accepted last year, you do not need to re-apply until your child goes to the junior high school.

Fridays
Each Friday is the day to show your school spirit by wearing your school t-shirt or sweatshirt or wearing the school colors (blue and yellow).

PTA Meeting
Our next PTA Meeting will be held January 6, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. The meetings are held in the teachers lounge. All PTA members are invited to attend.

Volunteer of the Month
Our volunteer of the month for November was Kristy King. She volunteered 698 minutes. Thanks for all of your hard work!

Classroom Emergency Kits
In the next couple of weeks the PTA will be sending a flyer home about classroom emergency kits. The purpose of these kits is to make sure that in an event of an emergency where our kids have to stay at school for a prolonged period of time, they will each have things that they may need during that time in their own classroom. The flyers will have a list of items you will need to send to school that will be in the kits. Each student will have their own kit stored in their classroom. If you have any questions or would like to help with this project call Stephanie Petersen at 489-7451.

January’s Nebo Healthy Lifestyle Challenge
Continued Enjoy the Ride Challenge: Along with October’s 30 minutes of physical activity, November’s 5 fruits and/or vegetables, December’s Enjoy the Ride Challenge doing an activity which the student chooses such as: working on a hobby, playing a sport, playing an instrument, reading a book, or watching a movie or favorite TV show and concentrating on being happy, this month we are continuing the Enjoy the Ride Challenge. Remember the students can work on a hobby, play a sport, play an instrument, read a book, or watch a movie or TV show and concentrate on being happy (for 25 days in the month). Thanks so much for your participation! Please record the student’s initials on the January Firelight/Healthy Lifestyle Challenge calendar. Turn in the calendar at the end of the month.

January PTA Minutes

Art City PTA Meeting
January 6, 2009 10:00 a.m.
Minutes

Attendance: Kellie Chatfield, Sarah Ferrin, Stephanie Petersen, Dave Rowe, Julia Murray, Sarah Sumsion, Nishelle Morgan, Mandi Jeppson, and Niccole Webster

Called to Order: 10:00

Presiding: Kellie Chatfield, PTA President

Motion to approve minutes were by Stephanie Petersen and Sarah Sumsion.

Fine Arts Program: Mr. Rowe discussed the fine arts program, the district has hired 4 people to train teachers. We discussed rotating teachers for training and kids also do art activities during day. PTA could supervise kids while teachers go and do training. We need around 12 volunteers. Possible date Feb. 26-27th for training.

Parent Volunteer and Fine Arts Day: Nishelle suggested not having parent volunteer and fine arts day in same month. Mr. Rowe suggested May but that will be too late. Nishelle will talk to the other teachers at faculty meeting and see what they all think. Parent Volunteer Day is having a student have a parent come in the classroom for every child and read with kids or do another activity so parents can meet teachers and be with their children as well. There needs to be a certain amount of time set for this day so teachers can plan lessons around it. Nishelle will take over planning and getting ideas for the Parent Volunteer Day.

Emergency Classroom Prep: Stephanie Petersen discussed the packets that students will assemble and bring back to school for the classrooms to have a packet with needed items in case of an emergency. Packets will be a zip-lock bag with emergency card info, family picture, band-aids, food, water, and a garbage bag inside. Bins will be placed in the teachers classrooms with the packets inside. Packets will go home with the students at the end of the year. 1 week will be given to collect the packets. Send email on 20th, fliers our on 22nd, and collect 26-30th . Whatever class brings all their packets back first was discussed to have 5 extra recess minutes.

Volunteer hours/Yearbook sales: Sarah Ferrin calculated 250 volunteer hours for December. Volunteer of the Month is Kristy King and Paulette Carter. Yearbook covers contest ends Friday for students and sales will begin in Feb. Idea of having a yearbook sales table set up at the SEP night.

Kellie Chatfield: There will be a treasurer training for Kellie, Stephanie, and Lori on Feb. 3rd at 11:30.

School Spring Pictures: Sarah Sumsion discussed doing school pictures the same as last year of Feb. 12th. Sarah Ferrin will take them and Mr. Rowe needs to be there. The info will get out to Nischelle and she will get it to teachers.
