Art City Parent and PTA Commissioner honored as one of Nebo District's Teacher of the Year

Eric Ferrin was recently honored as a Teacher of the Year for Nebo School District 2008-2009. He currently works at Spanish Fork Jr. High and also serves as the Yearbook Commissioner for Art City Elementary.

Spanish Fork Jr. High Principal John Degraffenried said, “Eric has accepted numerous school assignments that have made a positive effect on the school and with our students. He lends his computer skills to nearly every teacher in the building and makes the time to do this no matter how busy he is. He makes recommendations for new technology and then trains teachers in the best ways to integrate the technology into the classroom. In the classroom Eric is constantly looking for new methods to improve his teaching and facilitate student learning. If a student does not understand math concepts he is able to modify his approach, implementing best practices to help each student succeed.”

Art City Elementary has benefited greatly because of Eric's knowledge of the tech world! Thanks Eric and Congratulations!

Once the brownies have cooled, slice bananas and place on top of brownies.

Great Work Ladies...let's do it again next year!

radKIDS update and thanks from Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Anderton

radKIDS has been a lot of fun this year. As students repeat the class it is fun to see how much they still remember and the joy they get in staying safe. As we have been teaching the 2nd grade, it is fun to see how excited they are to learn how to keep themselves safe, knowing when it's okay and when it's not okay to use their techniques.

When you find yourself constantly saying "no, get back here", remind your students by asking them "Do you have the right to hurt yourself?"

Then say: "You are potentially putting yourself in danger if I can't see you, you can't hear me or if you are too far away for me to help you."

If they are hitting: Ask them "do you have the right to hurt anyone, including yourself?"

Remind them "No one has the right to hurt them and if someone has 'pushed' them or 'hit' them, they can come and tell because it is not their fault if someone tries to hurt them trick them or make them feel bad inside, and when it's not their fault they can tell".

Thank you for all those who took the time and helped with radKIDS this year. We look forward to another great year and hope that as parents you are finding it helpful and have a desire to come and help next year, we need you!!

Thank you Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Anderton

Need for Volunteers!

We have the best volunteers at Art City, and we have two great opportunities coming in May. We need volunteers for the Spring Carnival and the Fun Run.

The Spring Carnival
is May 15th, and we need people to help run the carnival. There are two, 2 hour shifts (4-6 pm and 6-8 pm). To get the great discount wrist band price, we need enough volunteers. Please contact Angela Jensen to volunteer, or email kelliejchatfield@msn.com with your name, phone number and which event you would like to help with.

The Fun Run
is May 27th, and volunteers are needed. Please contact Margie Fullmer, or email kelliejchatfield@msn.com with your name, phone number and which event you would like to help with.

Teacher Appreciation Week

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week, and it’s a great time to recognize and remember our teachers! There are great teachers everywhere but I believe that we are especially fortunate to have an abundance of terrific teachers at Art City Elementary.

My father-in-law was a teacher by profession for many, many years and when asked what he loved about teaching his first reply was often that he loved to “see the light bulb go on when a child finally got it!”….whatever “it” was, it was amazing to watch the long hours of work culminate in success.

I also learned from my father-in-law how important it is to let teachers know how valuable they are in our lives and the lives of our children. There were several parents that were vocal about their appreciation while their kids were in his class, but even more important was the feedback he received when he would run into those kids years later. Occasionally my father-in-law would meet his former students in their adult years, and “his kids” would share memories of their time with him. When he told us of these experiences it was always with very tender emotion. He loved his students!

It’s obvious to me that the teachers of Art City also love their students. After the final bell of the day has dismissed the students I often see our teachers lingering, sometimes for hours, preparing for the next day. I’m sure there are many that take several hours of work home as well. We need to make sure we take the time to recognize their dedication and to thank them for it. And even more important, we need to help our children show their gratitude and appreciation daily.

Parents, thank you for taking the time to be involved in your student’s lives at home and at school. The Teacher Appreciation Committee has set this Thursday April 9th as Art City’s Teacher Thank You Note Day. Please have your children take a moment and write a thank you note to their teacher. Perhaps we as parents could also write a note!

We appreciate all the support you’ve given throughout the school year. Thanks! And have a great week!
