2008-2009 Has Been an Amazing School Year
We want to send a HUGE thank you to our fantastic PTA! This year was a success due to the wonderful people of our Art City PTA!

Fall Registration
Please put Thursday, July 30th on your calendar. All elementary schools in Springville will be registering students this day. This registration will be for all NEW and RETURNING students. This is the day to pick up information packets, make donations, order school shirts, etc. Class lists will hopefully be available on this day. The FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL will be Wednesday, August 19th. The first day of Kindergarten is tentatively scheduled for August 26th.

Requests
Art City Elementary does not accept teacher requests from parents for the upcoming year. Instead, Mr. Rowe works closely with teachers when preparing class lists to ensure the best experience for each child and to keep classes balanced. However, if you have legitimate concerns, Mr. Rowe encourages you to put them in writing and schedule an appointment to discuss the best fit for your child before May 15, 2009. Mr. Rowe will not make any class changes for the next year after that date.

Moving?
If you already know that your children will not be attending Art City School next fall, please let us know before the end of the school year. Knowing now helps us to assure a smooth transition for your child and to more accurately prepare for next year. Thank you for your help.

Lunch Notes
As we near the end of the 2008-2009 school year, we need to remind you that the outstanding meal charges MUST be taken care of. Please make sure your child has enough money in their account to carry them through the final month of May. Money left over in student accounts will be credited to the student’s account for the beginning of the upcoming school year as long as the student remains within Nebo School District. Refunds will be issued at the parent/guardian’s request by telephone or in writing ONLY if notice is given TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THE END OF THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR. This is requested in order to allow sufficient time to accumulate cash funds for reimbursement. If you have any questions or would like to require a refund, please contact Kim at 489-2822.
End of Year Testing
The end of year testing for students in grades 1-6 is well underway. The last day of testing will be May 20th. End of level results will hopefully be available sometime this summer. Kindergarten students will be tested on an individual basis May 26th through 29th.

May 27th Annual Family Fun Run/Walk
This is for everyone in our school as well as family members that would like to participate! Start time is 9:30 a.m. More details to come. After lunch we will have an awards assembly with a random prize drawing. There will be awards for the FASTEST runners, so start training now. Mark your calendars and plan for some fun!

Library Books are Due!
Please remember that all library books are due on Monday, May 4th. It is important that all books are returned to the school by this date. Thank you for your help.

The Jungle Book Play
Art City is proud to present the musical, “The Jungle Book.” Come one and all for a jungle of a time!
· Date & Time: May 7 & 8 at 7:00 p.m.
· Where: Art City Elementary Gym
· Cost: Free
· Seating: Doors will open to the gym at 6:00 p.m. Seats are not allowed to be saved before that time. An adult can save up to five seats but must remain with those seats.

Summer Book Fair
Join us at Art City Elementary as we read for the record this summer. All of the minutes you read will count toward the world record for summer reading! And, the best part is, the record will be published in the 2010 Scholastic Book of World Records! The top 20 schools with the most minutes read will also be featured in the book. As part of our celebration we will be hosting a book fair July 9th and 10th. The school will be open for your purchases 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This will be our annual buy-one get one-free book fair. That is right, everything is buy one get one free, it is a terrific way to stock up for the summer and help our school Read For The Record!

May Events
Please check the calendar closely for the month of May. This is always a very busy month and we want to make sure that every family is aware of each activity.

PTA NEWS

PTA Thank You
Can you believe it! We've come to the end of another year at Art City Elementary. As a PTA Executive Board we want to thank Mr. Rowe, staff, teachers, parents, and students for supporting the PTA. We’ve been impressed with the great work that has been done by so many. We love Art City and hope that your summer break is a great one! See you next year!

PTA Meeting
Our last PTA Executive Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 5th at 10:00 a.m. in the faculty lounge.
Volunteer of the Month
Congratulations to Jen Hammond who was our Volunteer of the Month for March. Thank you for all that you do to serve the students at Art City.

Spring Carnival
· Friday, May 15th from 4-8 p.m. at Art City School
· Free pizza and food for the first 500 people
· 20 Blowup rides, Rock Walls, Games, Food and lots of fun!
· Ticket and wristband pre-sale on May 14th and 15th before and after school
· Wristbands are $6.00 for 3 years and up (good for all blowup rides and rock walls all night)
· Tickets are $1.00 for 5 and are good for games, rides, rock walls and food
· Prices for wristbands and tickets go up the night of the carnival

Box Tops for Education
Our box tops competition is going great! The contest will run until Friday, May 15th! That’s only a few more weeks to bring in as many box tops as you can to help our school earn money!

Bond Election
On June 23, 2009, Nebo School District will hold a Bond and Leeway Election. The $160 million bond is proposed with the purpose of funding construction of new schools and improving existing schools without raising taxes; the leeway would provide essential money for running the new schools and would raise taxes by only $13.75 annually on a $250,000 home. There is a slide show at www.nebo.edu/bond/ with information about the bond and leeway. There will also be a public hearing on Wednesday, May 13, at 6:00 pm at 560 S. Main in Springville. PLEASE take the opportunity to learn more about the growth issues facing Nebo School District and how the District will be able to issue the bond without raising taxes (even though the ballot for the bond will, confusingly enough, say differently). And don’t forget to vote on June 23! Our future student population will thank you.

Lots of Thank Yous
Thank you to Jeni Neel and her committee for a great and successful teacher appreciation week, Julia Murray for the great success that radKids has become, Eric Ferrin and his committee for working so hard to put the yearbook together and Christine Graham and her committee for everything involved with Hershey Track. Thanks to Deanna Lindsey for watching over our Awards and Grants, along with lots of well spent hours in the library. We also want to recognize those commissioners whose events will be held in May: Samantha Gwilliam and Theme Basket Fundraiser committee, Angela Jensen and her spring carnival committee, Wendy Packard and her field day committee, Kris Bunnell and her sixth grade graduation committee, Margie Fullmer and committee for the great Fun Run and a yearlong thank you to Hillary Shepherd and Cathy Dutson for completing all the paperwork involved with our Nebo Healthy Challenge. We thank you for your dedication in overseeing the great things that happen at Art City.

RadKids
RadKIDS has been a lot of fun this year. As students repeat the class it is fun to see how much they still remember and the joy they get in staying safe. As we have been teaching the 2nd grade, it is fun to see how excited they are to learn how to keep themselves safe, knowing when it's okay and when it's not okay to use their techniques. When you find yourself constantly saying "no, get back here", remind your students by asking them "Do you have the right to hurt yourself?" Then say: "You are potentially putting yourself in danger if I can't see you, you can't hear me or if you are too far away for me to help you." If they are hitting: Ask them "do you have the right to hurt anyone, including yourself?" Remind them "No one has the right to hurt them and if someone has 'pushed' them or 'hit' them, they can come and tell because it is not their fault if someone tries to hurt them trick them or make them feel bad inside, and when it's not their fault they can tell". Thank you for all those who took the time and helped with radKIDS this year. We look forward to another great year and hope that as parents you are finding it helpful and have a desire to come and help next year, we need you!
Thank you Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Anderton
